Ukraine Launches Major Drone Attack on Russia During Elections

In an unprecedented move, Ukraine has targeted Russia with a significant missile and drone attack, claiming to have deployed over 1,000 drones, described by Moscow as the “largest ever” drone strike seen during the ongoing conflict. This attack comes as Russia holds its parliamentary elections, raising concerns over stability and security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of this strike, stating it aims to undermine Russia’s financial support for its military efforts, urging the nation to pursue peace instead of war. Zelenskyy stated on social media, “Our long-range responses were felt acutely tonight in the Moscow region, specifically hitting critical facilities linked to Russia’s oil industry.”

He expressed that this action is not just a display of strength but a direct response to ongoing Russian aggression. Zelenskyy called on Western allies, including the U.S., Europe, and the G7 nations, to impose new sanctions on Russia.

“This week alone, Russia has launched countless attacks against us, and it’s important we find ways to defend ourselves and respond appropriately,” Zelenskyy continued. He emphasized the need for stronger actions against Russia to foster peace.

The Kremlin indicated that two individuals lost their lives and approximately 20 were injured due to the attacks as the elections were wrapping up. Moscow’s authorities claimed to have successfully intercepted most of the drone assault, asserting that over 1,110 Ukrainian drones were shot down across various locations including the Crimean peninsula and the Black Sea.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that 450 drones were destroyed while heading towards the capital, with damage reported to both an oil refinery and a residential building.

In response to the escalating tensions, Zelenskyy reiterated the urgency for Russia to reconsider its military strategy and opt for de-escalation, mentioning that political will is essential to make meaningful progress. He expressed gratitude towards international partners for supporting Ukraine’s response capabilities.

Amid these developments, a separate Russian drone strike on a monastery in the Kherson region resulted in casualties, further highlighting the ongoing violence of the conflict.

As the Russian elections, deemed lacking in genuine opposition, moved forward, President Vladimir Putin claimed that they serve to solidify support for Russian troops engaged in the war, framing it as a reflection of national unity. Putin stated that the collective will of the people would demonstrate unwavering support for the military actions in Ukraine.

This volatile situation continues to unfold, with both sides facing significant challenges as the war increasingly affects civilian life and governance.
