Finland Strengthens Border Security Amid Russian Tensions
The ongoing tensions from Russia have prompted Finland to take significant action to secure its borders. The Finnish government has recently completed a new border fence along its eastern frontier, spanning around 124 miles. This move aims to prevent unauthorized migrations from Russia, according to Petri Hakkarainen, political director for the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Hakkarainen expressed concerns about Russia’s strategies to use migrants as tools against Finland, saying that the country has previously faced situations where migrants were directed toward its borders, forcing Finland to respond.
In 2023, Finland made the bold decision to close its entire land border with Russia. This action led to a swift response from Moscow, which filed a formal complaint, labeling the closure as “Russophobic.” The Kremlin showed disappointment over Finland’s decision, stating it ended years of cooperative relations.
Finland shares a lengthy 833-mile border with Russia, the longest border for any country in the European Union or NATO. This new fence, along with the border closures, is seen as a necessary measure as Finland faces a potential increase in asylum applications, which could create social challenges.
With rising concerns about migration issues being used as a means of “hybrid warfare” by Russia, Finnish authorities have enacted the Border Security Act. This law gives border officials the power to manage and restrict asylum applications, especially if foreign influence is suspected of trying to destabilize the country.
Hakkarainen emphasized the importance of addressing security concerns while maintaining respect for human rights, acknowledging the balance needed in ensuring national defense. He noted that many people in Finland support the measures being taken, recognizing the long-term threat from Russia.
Finland’s move to strengthen its border security comes in the wake of its decision to join NATO in April 2023, a significant shift for the historically neutral nation, sparked by the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This decision has already led to an increase in unauthorized migrants at Finland’s eastern border.
As Finland stands firm on its security measures, Hakkarainen reminded that these decisions are made in light of a long-lasting determination to maintain a safe and peaceful life for its citizens in the complex regional landscape.
