Divyanshi’s Distress: Young Athlete Faces Crisis After Last-Minute Removal from Asian Games Squad

In a troubling situation for Indian sports, 18-year-old wushu athlete Divyanshi has expressed deep despair after being unexpectedly dropped from India’s Asian Games team. Just days before the team was scheduled to depart for Japan, she claimed she was unjustly removed from the 60kg Sanda category.

In a heartfelt nine-minute video shared on September 11, Divyanshi voiced her feelings of mental distress, saying she felt there was no reason to continue living. Divyanshi was replaced by Roshibina Devi, the 2022 Asian Games silver medallist who she had previously defeated in trials.

Reasons Behind the Removal

The Wushu Federation has stated that Divyanshi’s removal was due to a knee injury detected during a medical check-up, along with claims that she had not been training adequately. However, her coach, Ashok Gautam, challenges this explanation, asserting that the injury was not severe enough to bar her from competition and questioning the timing of her replacement.

Divyanshi accused Roshibina of intentionally injuring her during training sessions, which adds another layer of complexity to this ongoing saga.

Divyanshi’s Record in Trials

Coach Gautam emphasized that Divyanshi had consistently performed at her best in five selection trials over the past year, ranking at the top each time. He insists that her sudden removal raises serious questions, especially since Roshibina finished lower in the trials, placing fourth and losing to Divyanshi in the semifinals.

Gautam remarked, “She has been number one in all trials over the past year. Suddenly, her name is gone, and they pick someone who ranked lower.”

Concerns About the Selection Process

Roshibina, a recognized athlete with experience, has faced her share of injuries as well, including ACL issues in both knees. Gautam criticized the selection process and highlighted that Roshibina hasn’t had a strong competitive record in recent years, raising doubts about her qualifications.

He argued, “She hasn’t won any medals internationally in the last two years, which goes against the selection criteria being applied to Divyanshi.”

Emotional Toll on Divyanshi

The most distressing aspect for Divyanshi seems to be how the decision to remove her from the squad was communicated. In her video, she mentioned the lack of clarity and opportunity to present her case regarding her medical condition, which has left her feeling unheard.

“I have the right to speak. I wasn’t given a chance to explain my side or present my medical reports. I never expected this sudden change,” she said, expressing her confusion and hurt.

Divyanshi’s account points to more significant issues within the management of the selection process, suggesting that it was handled poorly.

Allegations of Harassment

In her video, Divyanshi revealed that she has faced ongoing mental harassment during her training camp, which she claimed was orchestrated by Roshibina since earlier months. She detailed an incident where she was allegedly injured intentionally during practice, claiming this physical setback caused significant disruptions to her training.

The situation remains unresolved as Divyanshi’s camp seeks to appeal the decision. With the Asian Games just around the corner, hope for a last-minute reversal seems slim.

Conclusion

Divyanshi’s case raises important questions about athlete selection processes and mental well-being in sports. As discussions are ongoing, the young athlete’s story sheds light on the pressures faced by competitors in high-stakes environments.
