New Investment Opportunities Being Created for NRIs in UAE
An exciting development is in the works for non-resident Indians (NRIs) living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Soon, they will be able to use a fund manager’s app to complete their investments seamlessly. With just a face scan using Aadhaar, NRIs will be able to invest $10,000 without needing to fill out any paper forms or visit an office. This initiative, led by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), aims to make GIFT City a key investment hub for India’s extensive diaspora and international investors.
K Rajaraman, the chairman of IFSCA, shared that this pilot program is specifically focused on helping those who hold Aadhar cards and are currently residing in the UAE. The main goal is to simplify the process of onboarding digital customers residing abroad while adhering to Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations. This move is part of IFSCA’s broader plan to develop an entirely digital framework for overseas investors. Last year, the organization introduced a video customer identification process for NRIs, and now they are testing the feasibility of self-service face authentication.
Ensuring Security in the Process
This international pilot will also scrutinize how securely the Aadhaar application can be accessed from abroad, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected. The information gathered during this testing phase will help identify any weaknesses before the system is made available on a larger scale. The IFSCA aims to have the new system operational by the end of the current financial year.
Plans are also in motion to expand this pilot to three more countries, including the United States, which would further assess the feasibility and security of Aadhaar-based face authentication for international investors.
According to Rajaraman, IFSCA envisions GIFT City as a central hub for NRIs to access global investment opportunities while still being able to invest in India. There are approximately 36 million people of Indian origin worldwide, including about 16 million NRIs. This sizable community represents a significant opportunity for investment, especially among wealthy individuals, family offices, and Indian businesses spread across the globe.
To capitalize on this potential market, the IFSCA is encouraging banks within the International Financial Services Centre to create wealth management services. Notable banks like HSBC and SBI have already established these units to cater to high-net-worth clients with international needs.
A Vision for Global Investment
The ambition doesn’t stop at just bringing investments into India. IFSCA aims for GIFT City to serve as a platform for NRIs to invest both globally and in India, positioning it as a cross-border wealth management center for the Indian diaspora.
For this vision to succeed, Rajaraman pointed out that two key requirements must be met: effective cross-border KYC processes and streamlined cross-border payments. Initially, the focus was on bringing back financial businesses that had moved overseas, such as fund managers in Mauritius and ship lessors in Dubai. With much of that effort now in place, the next challenge is to attract high-quality investors and encourage them to explore broader opportunities in India.
With these initiatives, IFSCA is working to simplify international investments for NRIs and foster a strong connection between India’s vast diaspora and the financial opportunities back home.
