Virat Kohli is set to make a return to domestic cricket for Delhi whenever he is able to, according to Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Jaitley confirmed that Kohli, a cherished figure in Indian cricket, remains a significant part of their plans. With Kohli currently focusing on One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, he could join Delhi for the 2026-27 Vijay Hazare Trophy, which starts in December.
Kohli is preparing for an ODI series against the West Indies beginning on September 27, followed by a tour to New Zealand for five ODIs in November. India will then bring Sri Lanka to their shores for three ODIs in December. This timeline suggests that Kohli’s availability for domestic matches is crucial.
Last year, Kohli made a notable comeback to Ranji Trophy cricket for Delhi after a 13-year hiatus, shortly before announcing his retirement from Test matches. He also participated in two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier.
During the DDCA’s annual prize distribution event held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Jaitley spoke about various topics, including the importance of grassroots cricket, plans for a new high-quality stadium, the growth of women’s cricket, and the association’s goal of restoring Delhi’s status in domestic cricket. The DDCA increased its prize money by 10% this year, distributing a total of ₹1.43 crore for the 2025-26 season.
Jaitley shared insights on rewarding grassroots cricket, stating that the DDCA oversees around 113 clubs which organize nearly 1,800 games annually, including close to 400 women’s matches. He noted that this vibrant cricket scene indicates the dedication involved in nurturing talent at the grassroots level. The DDCA recognizes outstanding players and clubs through significant prize money, highlighting the importance of this foundational level of the sport.
When asked about the future of Delhi cricket and infrastructure plans, Jaitley emphasized that the association is committed to developing its facilities in collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). They are striving to establish a world-class stadium that will serve the needs of cricketers for many years to come.
Addressing the question of whether Delhi will re-emerge as a dominant force in domestic tournaments, Jaitley mentioned that they have been working on a strategic plan for the past three years despite previous challenges. He believes that with players performing well in the Ranji Trophy, they are on the right path to achieving success.
Lastly, when asked directly about Kohli’s involvement in this season’s domestic cricket, Jaitley affirmed that Kohli feels a strong connection to the state, and whenever his international commitments allow, he will undoubtedly return to represent Delhi.
In summary, Kohli’s return to domestic cricket is eagerly anticipated, and the DDCA is committed to fostering talent and improving infrastructure to enhance the future of cricket in Delhi.
