Revitalize Your Marriage: Expert Tips to Overcome the ‘Quiet Quitting’ Trend

Quiet Quitting in Marriage: Understanding Emotional Withdrawal

In recent discussions about relationships, the term “quiet quitting” has emerged, not only in workplaces but also in marriages. This phrase describes a situation where one or both partners in a marriage start to withdraw emotionally while still remaining physically together. Experts emphasize that this is not a formal diagnosis but rather a way to illustrate the gradual decline in a couple’s emotional involvement.

New York City divorce lawyer James Sexton shared insights on what quiet quitting can look like in a marriage. He explained that instead of making a dramatic exit, a spouse might simply stop engaging actively in the relationship. They may choose to ignore the issues rather than face them directly. This can often feel easier than the pain of divorce, allowing the person to avoid being labeled as the “bad guy” who ended the relationship.

Sexton noted that in such cases, the spouse withdrawing might even gain sympathy, being viewed as the victim of a situation rather than the initiator of a breakup. This emotional detachment can be more concerning than frequent arguments because, according to Sexton, “the opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference.”

Signs of Emotional Withdrawal

Marriage expert Dr. Mindy DeSeta revealed that many couples often find themselves quiet quitting after spending decades raising children, realizing only later that they had emotionally checked out long ago. As life demands change, couples may discover they have drifted apart without acknowledging it.

Signs of emotional withdrawal can include a lack of shared activities, different bedtime routines, and spending time apart instead of together. The connection that once brought joy might be replaced by silence and separate interests.

Tips to Reconnect

Experts offer several practical tips for couples wishing to revive their connection:

  1. Small Gestures Matter: Simple acts of kindness can reignite the spark in a relationship. Sending a sweet text or sharing a favorite song can remind partners of the love that initially brought them together.

  2. Prioritize Quality Time: Focusing fully on each other during shared moments is crucial. Avoid distractions like phones during quality time to show that you’re fully present and invested in the relationship.

  3. Positive Communication: Instead of leading with complaints, highlight positive memories and suggest revisiting enjoyable experiences. This can create a more positive atmosphere and reinvigorate the relationship.

  4. Keep the Romance Alive: Flirting and dating your partner should continue throughout the marriage. Regularly show affection and interest to maintain the bond that brought you together.

Both Sexton and DeSeta emphasize the importance of consistent effort. Just as relationships require work, so does the emotional connection that keeps love alive. Being aware that time is limited encourages couples to appreciate and nurture their relationship before it fades further.

As Sexton wisely noted, every moment spent together is a precious gift, and it’s essential to make the most of it.
