Dan Lawrence displayed remarkable resilience during challenging conditions, finishing the day with an unbeaten half-century as England maintained a strong position in the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, despite frequent rain interruptions on the third day. Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas took advantage of a difficult pitch that offered inconsistent bounce and movement, earning three wickets. However, with England already enjoying a substantial first-innings lead and Lawrence holding firm, Pakistan faced an increasingly tough challenge when play was halted for the day.
Persistent rain delayed the start of play until 2:20 PM, with England resuming at 81 for 3, leading by 261 runs after bowling Pakistan out for just 110 the day before. Emilio Gay, who was 30 not out overnight, was joined by Harry Brook, who had managed seven runs.
Pakistan made an immediate impact after the delayed start. Gay was dismissed within the first ten balls when Abbas delivered a ball that stayed notably low, striking him on the leg.
The pitch continued to trouble the batsmen, with unpredictable bounce and significant seam movement. Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan also faced difficulties, taking several hits on his hands and body as the ball moved erratically. A brief rain delay only added to the stop-start nature of the day.
Abbas claimed another wicket when Brook edged a delivery that bounced unexpectedly high, leading to an easy catch for Rizwan. Jamie Smith, who had been England’s top-scorer in the first innings, followed soon after, unable to cope with a ball that jagged back and caught an edge that was fielded at square leg.
Lawrence, however, remained calm and aggressive, keeping England on the front foot. He took advantage of missed lengths from Khurram Shahzad, hitting consecutive boundaries, and then attacked Mohammad Ali with a four and a six back to back. His six was a confident lofted shot over deep extra cover, showcasing his determination to counterattack despite the tough conditions.
Another rain spell led to an early tea break, with Lawrence not out on 37 from 57 balls. After tea, Pakistan quickly struck again as Gus Atkinson fell to a leg before wicket off Mohammad Ali after a poor shot selection. Nevertheless, Lawrence continued to find ways to score, hitting a six off Ali Usman that brought him closer to his half-century.
He reached his sixth Test fifty shortly after, pulling a delivery from Mohammad Ali for a single to deep square leg. Just as he celebrated this milestone, the weather forced the players off the field again just a couple of overs later, with Lawrence carefully protecting his bat by tucking it inside his shirt.
Play marked the end of the day shortly after 6:30 PM, due to bad light, despite some patches of sunlight appearing on the horizon that suggested play could have continued.
For Lawrence, this innings was a valuable reminder of his importance to the England team. The 29-year-old was recalled to the Test squad for the Pakistan series after a two-year absence, having excelled in the County Championship. Ben Stokes’ retirement also opened up a position for an all-rounder at number six, with Lawrence’s off-spin adding further strength to his case.
He had previously scored a half-century during England’s innings victory in the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley. Prior to that match, Lawrence’s last Test appearance had been as an opener against Sri Lanka in September 2024.
With another composed innings under his belt and England in a strong position at Lord’s, Lawrence is seizing the opportunity of his second chance.
