New Film “Birds in the Dark” Set to Premiere at Busan International Film Festival
“Birds in the Dark” (original title “Hanere De Panchi”), directed and written by Shashank Walia, is scheduled to make its World Premiere at the Vision section of the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) from October 6 to 15, 2026.
This poignant film is set in rural Punjab and is presented in black and white. It explores various themes through dialogues in Punjabi, Kashmiri, and Urdu. Produced by Reema Kaur of Two Black Squares alongside Hansal Mehta and Sahil Saigal from True Story Films, the film delves into issues related to gender, caste, and class.
The Vision section of BIFF is known for showcasing the spirit of independent Asian cinema, focusing on personal and bold storytelling that reflects the richness of South Asian films.
In discussing the film’s selection, Walia expressed that “Birds in the Dark” resonates deeply with its audience, as it aims to enhance understanding through mutual support and solidarity. He shared, “This film was created to reveal what connects us and what truly matters, underscoring the power of love in our lives.”
Producer Reema Kaur, who also edited the film, mentioned her experience working closely with the community to capture the everyday moments that showcase resilience and strength. She emphasized how this journey allowed them to appreciate the power of community storytelling.
Hansal Mehta, a well-known figure in Indian cinema, is excited to make his debut as a producer at BIFF this year. He described Walia’s work as an exceptional exploration of themes such as gender, labor, justice, and love. Producer Sahil Saigal added that True Story Films is committed to supporting unique artistic voices and believes that “Birds in the Dark” truly deserves a platform like Busan.
