COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — In a thrilling display of cricket, Druv Jurel achieved a remarkable unbeaten century, securing his team’s first innings score to an impressive 503 for nine declared on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka. His performance came after Devdutt Padikkal also hit a century on the first day, laying a solid foundation for India’s innings.

Jurel, remaining at the crease with a score of 115 not out, showcased his talent by facing 177 balls and striking nine boundaries alongside two sixes. He built a crucial 112-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, who scored 63 before getting out on the very first ball after lunch, attempting an ambitious shot against off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha.

Earlier in the game, Pant returned to bat after taking a hit from a delivery by Lahiru Kumara. He faced 89 deliveries in total, hitting two sixes and six fours. After lunch, India resumed their innings at 419 for six and, despite a lengthy rain delay, managed to add 84 runs throughout the last two sessions, with the lower-order batsmen holding steady.
Due to rain, only 58 overs were bowled that day, with much of the second session lost. When play ended, Sri Lanka was again in trouble, having lost both their openers, Lahiru Udara and nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya, in quick succession.
Fast bowler Prasid Krishna dismissed Udara for just 1, caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal, while spinner Manav Suthar trapped Jayasuriya lbw for 2.
India’s innings commenced at 300 for 5, but they lost their sixth wicket shortly after starting the day. Saransh Jain, making his Test debut, was dismissed for 6 after attempting to play a bouncer from Asitha Fernando, who was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers with figures of 4 for 60.
Fernando acknowledged his team’s efforts but also noted that he would have preferred to see India dismissed for fewer runs. He expressed confidence in the Sri Lankan batting lineup, expressing optimism about their chances on day three as they aim to surpass India’s score.
Padikkal’s contributions on day one included his second Test century, as he scored 117 from 193 balls, consistently performing well after his impressive 167 in the first Test match, which India won by 165 runs.
In other news, the International Cricket Council has fined Indian batter Jaiswal and Sri Lankan bowler Fernando 25% of their match fees following an incident of inappropriate physical contact during the match. This happened when Fernando celebrated aggressively after dismissing Jaiswal, who reacted in the heat of the moment. Fernando stated that he accepted the penalty.
