Lando Norris staged an impressive comeback at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, clinching his second consecutive victory in Formula 1 and boosting McLaren’s position in the championship standings. After losing the lead to Kimi Antonelli following a restart, Norris managed to reclaim the top spot and crossed the finish line first.
Starting from pole position, Norris initially held the advantage over George Russell and Antonelli during a nail-biting qualifying session. However, the race took a sudden turn when Max Verstappen crashed his Red Bull car on the very first lap, causing the safety car to come out. Fortunately, Verstappen was unharmed, but the incident created chaos early in the race.
When the race resumed, Antonelli quickly overtook Norris at Turn 1, taking control of the lead for a significant part of the race. This left Norris with the challenge of reeling in the championship leader.
As the laps went by, Norris gradually closed the gap. The turning point came on lap 54 out of 72 when he executed a brilliant move, passing Antonelli on the outside of the first corner. In the same lap, he overtook Lewis Hamilton, regaining the lead as the finish approached.
A late Virtual Safety Car added a twist when Esteban Ocon’s Haas car broke down on the track. Antonelli seized the chance to pit for fresh tyres, while Norris opted to stay out on his older tyres. This decision put Antonelli in pursuit of Norris in the final laps, but Norris successfully maintained his lead.
He ultimately finished the race 11.536 seconds ahead of Antonelli, marking his second straight win following his success in Hungary. With this victory, McLaren has now claimed three consecutive Dutch Grand Prix titles at Zandvoort.
Completing the podium, George Russell finished in third place after Mercedes team orders allowed Antonelli to pass him. Lewis Hamilton came in fourth for Ferrari, while Charles Leclerc took fifth. Oscar Piastri from McLaren and Liam Lawson from Red Bull rounded out the top six.
Despite not winning, Antonelli extended his championship lead to 59 points, bringing his total to 242 points. Norris moved up to fourth in the standings with 159 points, keeping the competition alive as the season enters a critical phase.
