Scottish First Minister Defends Costly World Cup Trip

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, has faced criticism over spending nearly £100,000 on trips to the World Cup in the United States. The total cost, which includes hotels and other expenses, stands at £98,442.

Recent data released by the Scottish Government under freedom-of-information laws revealed that Swinney and several Scottish Government officials traveled to Boston on June 11, followed by a trip to Kentucky three days later. Additionally, Sports Minister Maree Todd flew to Miami for the team’s final group stage match against Brazil.

While Swinney and his senior officials traveled in business class, Todd and other officials opted for more economical economy-class tickets. Swinney has insisted that his government aimed to “minimize” costs despite the significant expenditure.

The flights amounted to £17,893 each for Swinney and his private secretary, John Webster, while the business-class ticket for his special adviser, Colin McAllister, cost £9,864. In contrast, the economy flights for other officials cost £11,800, and a car rental for the trip totaled around £10,000. Todd and four other officials spent £5,485 for their flights to Miami.

Stephen Kerr, a Conservative MSP, criticized the use of public funds, stating that while no one opposed the presence of SNP ministers supporting the national team, the costs were excessive. He argued that Swinney and his colleagues should have paid for their travel expenses themselves, especially as Scots face daily financial pressures.

In response to the backlash, Swinney explained that the costs were due to the “intense pressure on the time involved” and maintained that the government had made efforts to keep expenses low. A spokesperson for the Scottish Government remarked that international travel is essential for promoting Scotland, fostering relationships, and attracting investments. They emphasized that the men’s team qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 provided a unique opportunity to showcase Scotland on a global stage.
