Legendary Photographer Steve McCurry Discusses the Essence of Timeless Photography and Life in India

Renowned American photographer and photojournalist Steve McCurry, who has been capturing powerful images for over 40 years, recently shared his insights in Mumbai. Best known for the famous Afghan Girl portrait and his vibrant color images, McCurry has spent a significant amount of time photographing India, a country he finds deeply intriguing for its rich diversity and vibrant culture.

During an evening event organized by Leica India, McCurry spoke with Bombay Times about the importance of press freedom and what makes a photograph stand the test of time.

What Makes a Photograph Memorable?

When asked to distinguish between a good photograph and a timeless one, McCurry explained, “A timeless photograph resonates with you and tells a compelling story. It carries an emotional weight and reflects the authenticity of the moment. For me, beauty is not about perfection. It’s about capturing life as it is, with all its flaws. This perspective resonates with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which appreciates imperfection.”

He emphasized that the joy of photography comes from exploring the world. “For me, photography is about being out on the streets and engaging with people, not just taking pictures from my living room. While social media allows us to document our lives, it often lacks the artistry of true photography.”

Why India Continues to Inspire

McCurry’s connection with India runs deep. “India is an ancient land filled with an incredible mix of religions, landscapes, and cultures. I’ve had remarkable conversations with ordinary people while traveling by train here,” he recalled. He shared a memorable experience from the early ’90s at Ganpati visarjan in Mumbai, where he faced chaos that ruined his equipment but also led him to capture extraordinary moments.

He noted, “India is chaotic yet intelligent. Over the years, it has progressed significantly. Today, even a fruit vendor has a smartphone, which wasn’t the case decades ago. I find beauty in the hard work and dreams of everyday people, whether in busy streets or quiet villages.”

Reflecting on Iconic Moments

One of McCurry’s most iconic images, the Afghan Girl, features refugee Sharbat Gula. He recalled, “When I first photographed her, her expression was captivating, and she conveyed so much emotion. Meeting her again years later was surreal; she was a mother then, but in my mind, she was still that young girl.”

Capturing Ordinary Lives

Despite having photographed many celebrities, including famous Indian actors, McCurry revealed his preference for capturing everyday people. “I’ve met stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, but my heart lies in photographing the stories of ordinary individuals.”

Lessons from Conflict Zones

McCurry has visited some of the world’s most challenging regions. Reflecting on his experiences, he stated, “It’s crucial to report events as they happen, free from distortion. Press freedom is shrinking even in more developed nations. It’s vital for people to stay informed and aware of their circumstances.”

He pointed out the distraction caused by wealth and technology in society, urging people to focus on more critical issues like healthcare and education. “Protecting press freedom ensures that the power remains with the people.”

By shedding light on his journey and thoughts, McCurry continues to inspire many aspiring photographers and individuals alike. His commitment to storytelling and capturing the essence of humanity is a powerful reminder of the art of photography.
