India Claims Victory in Galle Test with a 165-Run Win
Galle, Sri Lanka – In an exciting finish, India secured a decisive victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test match, winning by 165 runs just before heavy rain could have halted the game. The match took place on Wednesday, the final day of the contest.
Manav Suthar, the young left-arm spinner, was the star of the show. He took three crucial wickets in the 76th over of Sri Lanka’s second inning and wrapped up the innings by claiming the last wicket in the 78th over. Suthar finished with impressive figures of 6 wickets for 55 runs, marking his first 10-wicket haul in just his second Test appearance, making him the youngest Indian spinner to achieve this feat in an overseas Test.
India set a target of 372 runs after scoring 462 in their first innings and 193 in their second. Devdutt Padikkal was named player of the match for his exceptional performance, scoring 167 and 44 runs. Sri Lanka, in pursuit of victory, managed to score 284, falling short despite efforts from their batsmen.
Sri Lanka started the final day at 175 for 6 but quickly lost their remaining wickets for just 31 runs off 64 balls. Indian batter Lokesh Rahul commented on the match, noting they were aware of the impending rain and didn’t want to delay play. He mentioned how breaking the partnership between Sonal Dinusha and Captain Dhananjaya de Silva was key to their success.
With this win, India celebrated its 600th Test victory and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The second Test will commence in Colombo on Sunday.
In the morning session, Dinusha and de Silva showed resilience, having created a solid partnership after surviving many deliveries. Both batsmen reached half-centuries during their time at the crease.
However, India’s Ravindra Jadeja made a breakthrough after dismissing de Silva, who scored 59 runs off 151 balls. Shortly after, Niroshan Dickwella fell to a catch behind the stumps, only adding to Sri Lanka’s woes.
Suthar eventually dismissed Dinusha, who had top-scored for Sri Lanka with 84 runs in this innings. Following Dinusha’s wicket, chaos struck as Sri Lanka lost their remaining batsmen swiftly, with Suthar claiming the last two wickets in rapid succession.
India’s captain, Shubman Gill, praised Suthar’s performance, calling him a promising player for the future. He also lauded Padikkal’s impressive hundreds, highlighting the significance of scoring big runs.
As the teams prepare for the next match, fingers are crossed for another thrilling contest.
