Concerned About an AI Collapse? These Tech Stocks Are Built to Endure.

Concerns Over AI Stock Valuations Amid Market Uncertainty

The Shiller Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio has climbed to 42, a level not seen since the dot-com boom, largely due to the rise of AI stocks. This rapid increase has led to worries that we may face an AI market bust similar to what happened in the early 2000s.

While AI is expected to be a key part of our future—much like the internet—stocks related to this technology experienced significant declines during the dot-com crash, despite the long-term potential of the industry. Many investors are now anxious that a similar pattern may surface with AI stocks.

However, predicting the timing of market downturns is notoriously difficult. Selling out of investments to dodge potential losses can also mean missing out on significant gains in the long run. A more thoughtful approach might be to focus on tech stocks that are poised to endure any downturn in AI markets. Here are three companies to consider that may remain resilient even if an AI bust occurs.

Alphabet: Transitioning with Caution

Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL, GOOG), managed to avoid the dot-com collapse by delaying its public offering until 2004. The company has been using AI since 2001 and has made strides with its Google Gemini project, countering competition from platforms like ChatGPT.

However, this progress comes at a steep price, with capital expenditures expected to soar to between $195 billion and $205 billion by 2026, up from $91 billion in 2025. As a measure to address these costs, Alphabet has also increased its liquidity to over $242 billion. However, its long-term debt has more than doubled to $98 billion in just six months. Free cash flow—money available after capital expenditures—has decreased to $53 billion from $67 billion a year ago.

Despite these challenges, Alphabet still demonstrates strength, showing around $186 billion in net cash from operating activities. With a P/E ratio of 17, the stock may be able to weather difficulties and set itself up for a future rebound.

Amazon: A Resilient Leader

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) was another major player during the dot-com era, facing more than a 90% sell-off after the bubble burst. Since then, it has emerged as a leader in internet sales, pivoting successfully into cloud computing and AI.

Currently, Amazon boasts about $123 billion in liquidity. However, it has committed to $220 billion in capital expenses for 2025, up significantly from $132 billion. This has led to a negative free cash flow of $7.6 billion over the trailing 12 months, and its long-term debt has reached nearly $129 billion.

That said, in the second quarter alone, Amazon generated $161 billion in net cash from operating activities. This strong performance gives the company flexibility to scale back on expenses if needed. Trading at a P/E ratio of 22—a relatively low figure compared to its past—Amazon could limit losses and be well-positioned for future growth.

Nvidia: Dominating the AI Chip Market

Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) has become a leader in the AI chip industry, contributing significantly to the AI boom and outperforming its competition.

If the AI market declines, Nvidia’s main concern isn’t its capital expenditures, which stood at $6.6 billion over the last year. Instead, investors are wary of accusations surrounding “circular financing,” where Nvidia invests in companies that also purchase from them. This has raised questions about the sustainability of Nvidia’s impressive growth.

To mitigate these concerns, Nvidia has partnered with several asset management firms to secure $500 billion in financing, showcasing the industry’s reliance on external funding.

Currently, Nvidia holds approximately $80 billion in liquidity and has a manageable $8.5 billion in total debt. With a solid free cash flow of $119 billion over the past year and a P/E ratio of 34, any potential declines are likely to be minimal and short-lived.

In summary, while there are concerns about a potential bust in AI stocks, companies like Alphabet, Amazon, and Nvidia have measures in place that could help them withstand market volatility. Each of these tech giants appears prepared to handle challenges, making them worthy considerations for investors looking to navigate uncertain times ahead.
