Devdutt Padikkal Shines in Galle with Impressive Century
Devdutt Padikkal showcased a brilliant performance during the first day of the Test match against Sri Lanka, marking his return to India’s Test lineup with a sensational unbeaten score of 131. This was Padikkal’s first international century, and it came after a lot of meticulous planning to prepare for the spin-friendly conditions in Galle.
After nearly two years away from the Test team, Padikkal stepped up on the field, combining forces with KL Rahul, who scored 77 runs. Thanks to their efforts, India finished the rain-affected day strong at 288 for 2 wickets after 73 overs.

His aggressive style was particularly successful against spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, as Padikkal stepped out and hit a remarkable six over long-on. The sweep shot became a vital tool for him, with nearly 40 runs coming from this tactic alone, underscoring his preparation for such spinning conditions.
Before the match, Padikkal had already made waves in a warm-up game, showcasing that his hard work was indeed paying off.
Seizing an Unexpected Opportunity
Padikkal got his chance because Sai Sudharsan was unable to play due to a toe injury. He didn’t just see this as a short-term opportunity; he fully embraced it and made his performance count.
Kotak noted the importance of adaptability over strict batting positions, stating that how players handle varying match situations matters more than batting at specific numbers in the lineup. This adaptability will be vital when Sudharsan is fit to return.
“Sri Lanka’s spin and fielding coach, Jordan Gregory, also recognized Padikkal’s significant contribution, complimenting both him and Rahul for pressuring the Sri Lankan team,” Gregory said. “Credit goes to Padikkal for his superb batting today, along with KL. It’s unfortunate that Sudharsan is injured.”
Padikkal’s job is still not done; with India in a robust position, he is eager to extend his lead and possibly transform his century into a double hundred. He has already put on a solid partnership with Rishabh Pant, scoring 52 runs together, and both players will be keen to elevate the innings further.
