Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has addressed the recent death threats directed at him and his wife, Dona Ganguly. He revealed that he has informed the police about the situation and expressed confidence that the matter will be resolved soon.
Currently serving as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Ganguly stated that the phone number linked to the threats is registered in Kolkata. He remains optimistic about the actions being taken by the police. “We have reported it to the police. I trust they will take the necessary steps to address this. The threats are coming from here in Kolkata. I have security measures in place,” he told reporters.
These comments followed an incident where Ganguly’s office received two threatening letters that targeted him, his wife, and individuals close to them. As a result, a formal complaint was lodged at the Thakurpukur Police Station in South Kolkata.
Authorities disclosed that there have been similar threatening letters sent in Ganguly’s name over the past six months, but previous messages did not raise enough concern until now. The latest letters included more explicit threats, prompting Ganguly’s office to take action.
The police have initiated an investigation to identify the sender and uncover the motivations behind the threats. They are currently analyzing the letters, tracking the courier service used, and looking into a mobile number linked to the sender.
Initial investigations suggest that the letters may have originated from a person in Belgharia, located in the North 24 Parganas district. The police are also monitoring the activity of the SIM card associated with the sender and have reached out to the courier service for additional information.
Kolkata Police are working to determine if the letters received over the past months were all from the same individual. Meanwhile, Ganguly has attempted to alleviate worries about his safety, highlighting the security protections he has in place. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focused on pinpointing the source of the threats and holding the responsible party accountable.
