Carrick Optimistic About Manchester United’s Title Prospects, Calls for Squad Improvements
Michael Carrick, the head coach of Manchester United, is confident that his team has the potential to compete for the Premier League title but acknowledges that further strengthening is necessary before the upcoming season. The focus remains on adding players who genuinely enhance the squad.
So far, Manchester United has welcomed three new players: Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Karl Darlow. Current pre-season activities are taking place in County Kildare, where Carrick emphasized the importance of recruitment, especially after finishing third last season.
“We have good potential to achieve something special,” Carrick said. “I’m not shy about the goal – we should strive for it. While I can’t guarantee we’ll win the title, it’s certainly what we’re working towards because that’s the standard at our club.”
Carrick mentioned the need for players who can improve the team rather than just signed for the sake of having more players. “It’s about making us better and helping us move forward,” he explained.
United has spent a total of £83.3 million on Tielemans, Santos, and Darlow but still trails behind newly promoted teams like Ipswich Town and Coventry City in terms of spending. Ipswich has invested £109.4 million, while Coventry has put down £92.2 million.
Nevertheless, Carrick insists that the club’s signing strategy will be thoughtful. “There are a couple of areas we want to strengthen,” he stated. “Our goals are clear, and we need to keep pushing, but any deals must be the right fit.”
The responsibility for further player recruitment now lies with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who are tasked with providing Carrick the players he believes are essential.

Another important topic is the future of Marcus Rashford, who is back with the squad after loan stints at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Carrick is pleased with Rashford’s return, especially as he could play against AC Milan in United’s final pre-season match, marking his first game since December 2024.
“He’s our player and a talented individual who brings something unique to our team,” Carrick stated.
The return of Rashford, alongside players like Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, has enhanced Carrick’s options. The United manager hopes to see improvement in the squad, both from returning players and potential new signings before the season kicks off.
