Air India Flight from Phuket to Delhi Experiences Mid-Air Drop, Injuries Reported
On August 4, an Air India flight (AI2379) traveling from Phuket to Delhi faced a frightening incident when it suddenly lost altitude, dropping 300 feet during cruise. This unexpected event resulted in injuries to 24 individuals, including four crew members, according to a release from the Press Information Bureau.
The flight was carrying a total of 137 passengers, including three infants, along with eight crew members, comprising two pilots and six cabin staff. Initial reports indicated that turbulence caused the sudden drop, injuring several passengers.
Fortunately, the aircraft stabilized shortly after the incident and landed safely in Delhi. Following standard procedure, both pilots were subjected to tests for psychoactive substances post-landing. It was revealed that the pilot in command tested positive for marijuana.
Investigating Possible Technical Issues
Reports suggest that the crew documented multiple technical problems prior to the altitude drop in a preliminary defect report (PDR). Sources indicate that the pilots noted an autopilot disconnection and mentioned a stall warning along with an electronic alert related to flight control systems.
An investigation into the incident is underway, exploring all possible factors, including these suspected technical glitches. However, Air India has refrained from commenting on any findings, citing the ongoing investigation, and emphasized their cooperation with the authorities.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu confirmed that two crew members who suffered spinal injuries remain hospitalized at Fortis Hospital. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is currently examining the situation, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will take the necessary regulatory actions based on the findings of the investigation.
