A tragic incident occurred in Delhi’s Mehram Nagar on Tuesday when a 48-year-old woman named Jaiwanti was struck and killed by a speeding BMW while crossing the road. Local residents and Jaiwanti’s family reacted with anger, blocking the road in protest.
Authorities reported that the accident took place around noon as she was using a zebra crossing on her way to lunch. The collision was so intense that she died instantly at the scene. Police have arrested the driver, identified as 38-year-old Deepak, who lives in Pratap Nagar, Mandoli.
Officials have registered a case against him, and further investigations are underway.
### Locals Protest
Following the accident, local villagers gathered to protest, leading to significant traffic disruptions. Heavy police presence, including paramilitary forces, was deployed to maintain order.
Traffic near Terminal-3 (T-3) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport was heavily affected as locals blocked a portion of the road. The Delhi Traffic Police noted that the stretch from the NSG Red Light to T-3 was closed due to the protest, prompting alternate routes for commuters.
Those traveling from Mahipalpur to T-3 were advised to use the alternate route via NH-48. Additionally, traffic coming from T-3 towards T-1, Dhaula Kuan, and Mahipalpur was redirected. Personnel were stationed at diversion points to help manage the situation and assist drivers.
