Capybaras Visit Brazilian Legislature, Capture Attention of Lawmakers
A group of capybaras made a surprising entrance at the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly in Cuiabá on July 30. Their unexpected visit shifted focus from an important upcoming vote as they wandered through the government building.
Staff member Nayara Bueno captured the moment on video, showcasing the animals calmly exploring the building while employees worked to gently guide them back outside. “They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno shared with reporters.
Fortunately, the furry visitors didn’t cause any damage to the legislative space. The assembly is located near a park that provides easy access for the capybaras, making their appearance a common sight.
Capybaras, native to South America, are semi-aquatic mammals usually found near wetlands. Known for their sociable nature, these animals often travel in groups and can weigh up to 175 pounds. Their laid-back demeanor has made them popular on social media, where users enjoy sharing their amusing interactions with people and other animals.
