New Delhi — The dates of August 5 hold deep significance for both India and Pakistan, but their interpretations are starkly different when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir.
In India, this date marks the 2019 changes to the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir, which brought the region into line with the rest of the country. In contrast, Pakistan commemorates this day as “Youm-e-Istehsal,” or Day of Exploitation, viewing the Indian actions as an attempt to suppress the people of Kashmir.
Even after seven years, the two nations stand firm in their differing views. India highlights advancements in infrastructure, tourism, investment, and elections as indicators of progress, while Pakistan asserts its opposition to New Delhi’s governance in the region.
Supporters of the changes made in 2019 point to significant developments in Jammu and Kashmir, such as improved transportation links and the establishment of important educational and healthcare institutions.
One major development is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project, which strengthens connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the national railway system. Key features include the impressive Chenab Rail Bridge and the introduction of the Vande Bharat train service that began operations in June 2025.
Additionally, new institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Jammu and branches of the Indian Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Technology have made healthcare and higher education more accessible.
Post-2019, government reports indicate a noticeable rise in tourism and new investment opportunities in the region. However, security issues remain a concern, highlighted by the April 2025 attack in Pahalgam, which adversely affected tourism.
Political involvement has returned with local elections, including panchayat polls and the upcoming 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The Indian government views these elections as proof of the restoration of democratic processes at the grassroots and regional levels.
On the other hand, the situation in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has been different. Residents have frequently protested issues such as high electricity prices, inflation, and the privileges of government officials.
Protesters argue that despite the region generating substantial hydroelectric power, local consumers are burdened with steep electricity costs. They are calling for better economic relief and greater accountability from their government.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has pointed to these protests as evidence that Pakistan is mismanaging resources and violations of resident rights. In an October 2025 briefing, the ministry linked the unrest to what it describes as Pakistan’s oppressive policies and exploitation of the region’s resources.
In response to protests, authorities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have imposed curfews and other restrictions. India has criticized the elections held there, claiming they serve to legitimize Pakistan’s governance over an area it believes is rightfully theirs.
These contrasting observances point to the broader conflicts between India and Pakistan. India focuses on integration, development, and the electoral process on August 5, while Pakistan uses the day to denounce the loss of special status for Jammu and Kashmir.
The anniversary serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues faced on both sides of the Line of Control, including security risks, political challenges, economic struggles, and competing claims for legitimacy and representation.
