Google Veteran Launches New AI Startup
Jeff Dean, a long-time leader at Google, is leaving the tech giant to start his own artificial intelligence company. Known for his impactful work at Google, Dean has decided to take on this exciting challenge with a strong team of fellow experts.
Joining Dean are several distinguished researchers, including Sanjay Ghemawat, a top engineer, Quoc Le, a prominent AI researcher, and Oriol Vinyals, a senior scientist at Google DeepMind. Dean intends to take on the role of CEO at this new venture.
The startup is named Discovery Loop, which aims to enhance scientific research through the use of advanced AI technologies. The team plans to develop powerful algorithms that can run thousands of experiments at once. The goal is to speed up research and make the process of experimentation more efficient.
Discovery Loop is also looking into ways to use AI for creating even better AI, which could further cut down the need for human involvement in the research cycle. In a recent press release, the team mentioned the bottleneck caused by traditional methods of scientific research, which often rely on slow, sequential processes. They believe that their AI systems can change this by automating entire experimental workflows, greatly increasing the speed and effectiveness of innovation.
For years, the tech and science communities have been eager to see how AI can help in scientific discovery. This interest has only recently begun to turn into real commercial opportunities.
The startup has secured financial backing from various sources, including Alphabet, Google’s parent company. The first round of funding is co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from other notable investors like Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed.
In a joint statement, the founding team expressed their vision: “The next great frontier for AI is to go beyond answering questions and to begin making discoveries. By speeding up how engineering and scientific discoveries occur, we can bring transformative technologies to the world much faster.”
Dean’s journey with Google began in 1999, where he was the company’s 30th employee. Over the years, he has played a key role in building Google’s core systems for search functionality and AI research, including the company’s work on multimodal models.
In an interview, Dean commented on the potential for AI to automate the traditionally human-driven aspects of experimentation, leading to a higher volume and quality of research outcomes. He believes this could pave the way for exciting scientific breakthroughs in the future.
