Opposition Criticizes Modi After Instagram Remarks
On Saturday, leaders from the Congress Party and the Samajwadi Party responded strongly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Instagram video. In this video, Modi mentioned he had “forgiven” the youth of the country for the harsh words directed at him during protests. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, challenged the Prime Minister, suggesting that instead of offering forgiveness, Modi should apologize to the students for a “corrupt” exam system. “They do not need his forgiveness,” Gandhi stated.
In his late-night video, the PM acknowledged the frustration in society but emphasized the need to guide young people. He expressed his desire to forgive them, remarking, “People make mistakes,” and noted the unfortunate nature of the abusive language used by some protestors. He shared that he faced disrespect during a protest at Jantar Mantar, which even extended to his late mother.
Rahul Gandhi shared his thoughts on X, saying, “Nothing hurts more than seeing a parent mourn their child. Behind every lost young life is a family filled with pain.” He made these comments following a visit to Tamil Nadu, where he met with families of students who tragically lost their lives. Gandhi criticized the PM’s approach, mentioning issues like leaked exam papers and the cancellation of tests that left students’ hard work in vain.
Gandhi emphasized, “Students are told to be honest in a system that fails them. The Prime Minister’s attempt to ‘forgive’ students shows a lack of understanding.” He argued that Modi has never met a grieving parent or spoken to students affected by exam scandals, implying that it is the students who deserve an apology, not forgiveness.
Former Union Minister P Chidambaram raised a question on social media: “Has the Prime Minister forgiven the BJP trolls who attack critics online?” Similarly, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera noted that rather than seeking forgiveness from the public, Modi was inappropriately claiming to be the one forgiving.
Akhilesh Yadav, head of the Samajwadi Party, asserted that the public would not forgive the BJP for not meeting promises they made. He stated, “Even a humble apology won’t change how people feel about the BJP’s actions.” Uddhav Thackeray from the Shiv Sena (UBT) echoed these sentiments, calling for an apology from both Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the violent treatment of student protestors.
In response, the government defended its track record, mentioning legislative actions like the Public Examinations Amendment Bill aimed at improving accountability in the education sector. They also expressed readiness for discussions in Parliament, suggesting that some opposition leaders had previously called for these discussions.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi countered, stating that while Modi shows sensitivity to public issues, the frustration displayed by opposition leaders reflects their political despair.
A Viral Apology From a Young Protestor
In related news, a 15-year-old girl, who was featured in a clip where she used offensive language against PM Modi, released an apology video on social media, claiming she was “influenced” and expressed her regret, stating this was her “first and last mistake.” Following the video, a Zero FIR was filed against her in Noida, prompting this public statement. However, the authenticity of her apology could not be independently verified.
