Long Working Hours Impacting Mental Health of Resident Doctors: NMC to Supreme Court
NEW DELHI: The issue of long and exhausting working hours for resident doctors has been highlighted as a serious concern, affecting their mental health. In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the National Medical Commission (NMC) emphasized the need for reasonable working hours and adequate rest to ensure the well-being of doctors as well as quality patient care.
However, the NMC stated that it could not guarantee these conditions, as the responsibility lies with central and state health authorities. This affidavit was filed in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) from a group of doctors advocating for healthier working environments. The commission shared findings from a task force, revealing the tough conditions faced by these doctors.
According to the report, the demanding schedules, including long shifts of up to 24 hours and back-to-back duties, have become major stressors for many postgraduate doctors. The NMC pointed out that such extended hours, without enough rest, lead to both physical and mental exhaustion, ultimately affecting their performance and health.
The “United Doctors Front,” a doctors’ organization, has also approached the court, seeking better working conditions. They highlighted a troubling rise in suicide cases among doctors, reporting that around 150 such incidents have occurred over the past five years.
