Google Cloud Launches Agentic Cinema: The Blockbuster Hackathon with $75,000 Prize
Google Cloud has kicked off the Agentic Cinema: The Blockbuster Hackathon, an exciting online competition that offers a total prize pool of $75,000. This contest is focused on creating AI tools tailored for the film and entertainment industry.
The submission period started on July 27 and will end at 10:00 p.m. GMT+1 on September 7, 2026. To participate, entrants must be legally eligible based on their country’s age regulations, though some regions may have restrictions.
The challenge encourages developers to create functional AI agents or systems utilizing Google Cloud’s Gemini and Agent Builder. Each submission must be integrated with a product or Model Context Protocol server from partners like IBM, Grafana, Parallel, ClickHouse, or Replit.
It’s important to note that this competition is not about generating films using AI. Instead, participants are asked to develop practical tools for people in the media and entertainment sectors, including filmmakers, screenwriters, studio crews, and even movie fans.
Possible applications for the hackathon might include things like script processing, video transcription, asset captioning, storyboarding, speech generation, sentiment analysis, and managing production data. Google Cloud also offers guidance on crucial areas such as deployment, function calling, security, and database access.
Key Submission Requirements
Simply having an idea or a demo won’t cut it; entrants must provide a working project. Each submission should include a URL to a hosted application and a three-minute video showcasing how the agent operates. This video must be accessible on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo and should be in English or include English subtitles.
Furthermore, every entry needs a public open-source code repository that contains the source code, assets, and detailed instructions for running the project. It’s essential that the repository includes a complete open-source license and demonstrates the practical use of both Google Cloud and the selected partner service.
Just mentioning a partner technology in documentation won’t suffice; it must be directly included in the project code.
Participants need to choose one partner track and fill out the Devpost submission form. Projects will be judged based on their use of the same partner technology.
Prize Structure and Judging
The prize pool is divided among five partner tracks: IBM, Grafana, Parallel, ClickHouse, and Replit. Each track will award first, second, and third prizes, with $7,500 for first place, $4,500 for second place, and $3,000 for third place. The total prize fund sums up to $75,000, with first-place winners also gaining the chance for promotional support on social media.
Entries will be evaluated on factors such as technological execution, product design, impact potential, and overall idea quality. Organizers are looking for submissions that provide a solid product experience while addressing specific needs for a defined audience.
At this time, the full judging panel has yet to be announced.
Developers can choose to follow either a managed, low-code path or a custom software development route. Resources provided include the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Agent Builder, Agent Engine, and Google Cloud services for data connectivity.
Additionally, Google Cloud is offering eligible participants a chance to request $100 in cloud credits, with approvals usually taking one to five business days, while supplies last.
All project components—including the demonstration video, public repositories, and submission forms—must be submitted by 10:00 p.m. GMT+1 on September 7, 2026.
