India Shines on Medal Standings in Commonwealth Games 2026

India enjoyed a spectacular day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday, showcasing an outstanding performance from its boxing team. With one competition day left, India climbed to fourth in the medal standings.

On this remarkable day, the Indian team secured eight gold medals, with seven of those earned in boxing. The total medal tally now stands at 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, totaling 39 medals. Only Australia, England, and Canada are ahead of India in the standings after an impressive day in Glasgow.

Boxers Lead the Charge

The boxing team had an extraordinary outing, achieving the best performance in the country’s history at the Commonwealth Games. They dominated the boxing medal table with seven gold and three silver medals.

Highlighting the day, women boxers Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), and Arundhati Choudhary (70kg) all returned with gold medals. In the men’s category, Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg) added to the tally.

Priya Ghanghas made headlines with her remarkable comeback. After losing the first round against Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh, she rallied back to win the match 4-1. Sachin Siwach’s journey was equally thrilling. Despite a rough start with a point deduction, he secured victory with a stunning knockdown in the final moments of the match, finishing with a 3-2 split decision win.

Arundhati Choudhary had a smooth match, easily winning her final against England’s Chantelle Reid by a unanimous 5-0 decision. However, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain settled for silver after losing narrowly to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree, while Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (55kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg) also finished with silver medals.

India’s boxing achievements have significantly surpassed the previous best performance at the Gold Coast in 2018, where the team had secured seven medals, including three gold.

Gulveer Singh Makes History

In athletics, Gulveer Singh created history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men’s 5000m at the Commonwealth Games. He secured bronze with a time of 13:24.95 after a thrilling final sprint. Earlier in the week, he had already won silver in the 10,000m race, making him the first Indian to achieve two track and field medals in a single edition of the Games.

India also saw a successful outing in the men’s triple jump, with Praveen Chithravel taking home silver and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran clinching bronze. Dev Kumar Meena narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s pole vault, finishing fourth.

Para Athletes Excel

India’s para athletes continued to shine, with Soman Rana winning gold in the men’s F57 shot put with a throw of 13.40m. He was joined on the podium by Shubham Juyal, who took silver. This marked India’s best-ever performance in para sports at the Commonwealth Games, finishing with seven medals: three gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Judo Achievements

In judo, Unnati Sharma secured bronze in the women’s 63kg category, bouncing back from an earlier semifinal loss. This marks India’s best-ever judo performance at the Commonwealth Games, bringing the total to four medals. However, Harsh Tokas narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 81kg category.

Mixed Results

The lawn bowls competition saw Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar exit after a tie-break defeat, while Nayanmoni Saikia also faced an exit in the women’s singles. Track cycling results were disappointing, with several athletes failing to qualify for the finals.

As the Games near their conclusion, India heads into the final day bolstered by its boxing success, aiming to secure more medals and finish strong in Glasgow.
