IPL Business Value Hits $20.6 Billion as Investor Interest Grows
The Indian Premier League (IPL), known as the richest Twenty20 cricket league in the world, saw its business value rise by over 11% this year, reaching an impressive $20.6 billion, as reported by the U.S.-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey. This translates to about ₹1.97 lakh crore.
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has attracted top cricket talent and developed a strong commercial framework that includes income from broadcasting, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and franchise investments.
Recent ownership changes within the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals highlighted the league’s strong appeal to high-profile investors. Earlier this year, a consortium including Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group, and Times of India Group announced they would acquire the Bengaluru franchise for a record-setting $1.78 billion. In a separate deal, the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla confirmed their purchase of Rajasthan for $1.65 billion in May.
According to the “2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study,” this marks the second consecutive year of double-digit growth in the IPL’s value. Harsh Talikoti, a director at Houlihan Lokey, indicated that franchise valuations are reaching new heights, private investments are surging, and the league’s commercial environment is diversifying.
“The IPL is a unique blend of sports, media, and consumer engagement, supported by strong revenue forecasts and efficient cost structures,” Talikoti stated. He emphasized that recent transactions show continued investor confidence in long-term value opportunities within the league.
Furthermore, the IPL’s standalone brand value increased by 10.3% over the past year, bringing it to $4.3 billion. The reigning champions, Bengaluru, continue to lead as the most valuable franchise with a brand worth $312 million.
