Arsenal Manager Signs Long-term Contract Extension

Arsenal Football Club has announced that their manager, Mikel Arteta, has signed a new contract which will keep him at the helm until June 2030. This news comes after a successful season where he led the team to their first Premier League title in 22 years.

Arteta took over the managerial role in December 2019 during a challenging period for the club, as they were sitting in 10th place in the league under the previous manager, Unai Emery. Since then, Arteta has been pivotal in the club’s efforts to rebuild and restore its reputation as one of Europe’s elite teams.

In a statement, Arteta expressed his excitement about the future, saying, “It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue working with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, and I feel honored to be part of its journey.”

After ending his playing career at Arsenal in 2016, Arteta initially worked as an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before returning to Arsenal in 2019 as their first senior manager. Under his leadership, Arsenal has progressively improved, finishing in the top five of the Premier League in the 2021-2022 season and subsequently winning the league last season.

Arteta also guided the team to the Champions League final during his tenure, despite a tough loss to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout. The club has made significant investments to strengthen their squad, bringing in key players like Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, and goalkeeper David Raya.

His managerial success is noteworthy, as Arteta boasts a win percentage of 62.05% across 361 matches—making him the most successful manager in that regard in the club’s history.

Richard Garlick, Arsenal’s chief executive, highlighted the importance of this moment for the club, stating, “We want to create a winning era together with Mikel.”

At 44 years old, Arteta is optimistic about the future, conveying his belief that the best times are still ahead for Arsenal. He remarked, “We have built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime. This is just the beginning of what we can achieve together.”

Currently, Arsenal holds the second position in the Premier League standings and is set to face Leeds United at home after the international break this Saturday.
