Gunfire Hits U.S. Consulate in Toronto for Second Time This Year
On Monday, a gunman targeted the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, marking the second shooting incident at the location this year. Police found a shell casing at the scene, and some damage was seen on the building’s exterior. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
In a statement, the consulate confirmed that operations continue as normal, although some routine services for U.S. citizens will need to be rescheduled.
Toronto’s Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo mentioned that a high-speed chase followed the shooting, which lasted for about an hour, but no arrests have been made yet. Barredo stated, “We will take this investigation very seriously and will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
Mayor Olivia Chow referred to the shooting as a “brazen attack,” vowing to catch the individuals involved. This recent shooting comes just months after another incident on March 10, when two suspects fired shots at the consulate and then fled in a stolen vehicle.
The police have maintained a visible presence at the consulate since the first shooting, with patrol vehicles stationed nearby during the latest incident. Barredo noted that two security personnel were inside the building at the time.
Authorities are looking into possible links between this shooting and recent violence in the area, including gunfire at two Jewish-owned bakeries over the weekend. Barredo stated, “The motive for the consulate shooting is still under investigation. Investigators will pursue the evidence wherever it may lead.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his outrage over the recent violence, asserting that law enforcement will work to hold those responsible accountable.
The investigation continues as police search for more information about the shooter and any possible connections to other local crimes.
