Education Minister Resigns Amid Nationwide Protests
India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, has stepped down following widespread protests by youth across the nation. This unrest was triggered by a scandal related to a competitive university entrance exam. Members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had made the minister’s resignation one of their main demands.
On Saturday, thousands of demonstrators gathered in central New Delhi, particularly at the historic Jantar Mantar site. Following the announcement of Pradhan’s resignation, protesters left humorous posters on walls, poking fun at the government’s legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Some even targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi in their graffiti.
Protesters shared videos on Instagram from various cities, using memes and witty slogans to express their frustrations. The movement’s name comes from a comment made by the head of India’s judiciary, who referred to unemployed youth as “cockroaches,” which also plays off the name of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The protests began in May after issues surfaced regarding the entrance exam. Just days before Saturday’s demonstration, clashes with police resulted in injuries, and law enforcement used tear gas to disperse crowds.
Karan Azad, a 24-year-old law student, mentioned that humor has become a coping mechanism for young people facing disappointment and helplessness. Content creator Arun Singh pointed out that the protesters’ use of memes is a natural response and language for younger generations.
Scholar and writer Ananya Vajpey noted that the satirical posters helped gather public sympathy and made the protests appear less menacing. She suggested that the aggressive response from authorities against these young protesters generated further backlash.
