German Police Search for Suspect in Berlin Pride Attack
Authorities are on a manhunt for Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old linked to a tragic incident at a Pride Festival in Berlin that left one person dead and many injured. The attack occurred when a van drove into a crowd in Tiergarten park, with the vehicle crashing into a tree afterward. Witnesses reported that Ballout attacked several individuals with a machete before fleeing the scene.
Following nearly 24 hours of searching, police confronted and killed Ballout in a nearby suburb. Officials suspect the attack may be linked to terrorism, noting Ballout’s connections to Islamic groups.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated, “Everything we see here points to us dealing with an Islamic terror attack.” He mentioned that Ballout was known to the police for previous offenses and had expressed intentions to join the militant Islamic State group. Although Ballout was born in Germany and his mother became a naturalized citizen in 2002, he had multiple previous run-ins with law enforcement, including a suspended prison sentence.
The deadly incident took place just a short distance from one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ events, the Christopher Street Day Pride celebration. Organizers halted festivities soon after the attack, urging attendees to leave the area for safety.
In the aftermath, Berlin’s fire service reported that one person died in the attack, and at least 29 others were hurt, with several suffering serious injuries. Police have been actively investigating the suspect’s whereabouts, conducting searches across various parts of the city.
