Pride Festival in Berlin Cancelled After Deadly Van Incident

Berlin authorities cancelled a major Pride event on Saturday after a tragic incident left one person dead and several others injured when a van struck a crowd during the Christopher Street Day festival, which celebrates LGBTQ+ pride.

According to police, at least 16 individuals required medical attention due to their injuries. The festival, known for its vibrant atmosphere, had drawn large crowds to the city.

As part of an ongoing manhunt, officials stated they have identified a suspect and are actively searching for him. This individual reportedly has connections to Islamic groups, although police are still piecing together the exact motives behind the attack. Police spokesperson Florian Nath mentioned, “The suspect is known to police as part of certain circles here in Berlin, and we are rigorously pursuing this case.”

In a separate statement, another police spokesperson, Alexander Klute, noted, “We currently have no information on the motives or identity of the perpetrator at this time.”

Following the van’s collision with the crowd, which then struck a nearby tree, police emphasized the presence of over 2,000 officers ensuring safety at the event. The injuries reported include several that are life-threatening.

Authorities confirmed that hundreds of thousands of revelers attended the festival, which included a parade and was set to conclude with a performance in Tiergarten park near the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin’s Mayor Kai Wegner called the incident a “brutal attack” on the city’s open and diverse society. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, praised the emergency responders, and commended the police for their swift action in the investigation. “Berlin is a city of freedom, and today that freedom was attacked in a horrifying way,” he stated.

The incident casts a dark shadow over what should have been a day of joy and celebration, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety at large public events.
