India Announces 45% of Exports to U.S. Shielded from New Trump Tariffs Following Trade Discussions

India’s Exports to the U.S. Get a Break from New Tariffs

India announced on Saturday that almost half of its exports to the United States will not be affected by the latest increase in U.S. tariffs. This positive outcome follows recent trade discussions that allowed India to qualify for a lower tariff category under the trade rules set by President Donald Trump.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, around 45% of India’s shipments to the U.S.—which include generic medicines, smartphones, steel, aluminum, and auto parts—will be exempt from the additional 10% tariff introduced last week.

These exemptions are expected to give Indian exporters a competitive edge, especially as many businesses face higher trade barriers and uncertainty regarding future U.S. tariff policies. India is also actively pursuing discussions with the U.S. to finalize a wider trade agreement.

On the other hand, the remaining 55% of Indian exports will incur the new 10% duty. However, the ministry pointed out that India’s tariff rates are still lower than those imposed on many other countries affected by U.S. trade measures.

Trade relations between India and the U.S. have been under negotiation for over a year. A preliminary agreement reached in February suggested an 18% tariff on Indian goods. However, recent legal changes in the U.S., including a Supreme Court decision that affected Trump’s tariff framework, have changed the trading environment significantly.

This announcement comes amid worries about possible U.S. tariffs on generic medicines, which have raised concerns among Indian pharmaceutical companies, as the U.S. is their largest market.

Earlier this month, India dismissed claims that it might face higher tariffs related to labor issues, arguing that the U.S. failed to provide proof that India lacks sufficient protections against forced labor.

Overall, this development marks a significant moment in India-U.S. trade relations, with potential benefits for Indian exporters still ahead.
