India Positions Itself as a Key Player in International Trade Disputes
India is emerging as a leading location for resolving international trade disputes effectively and fairly, according to Chief Justice Surya Kant. Speaking at a significant conference organized by the Supreme Court and the Ministry of External Affairs, he celebrated the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
The Chief Justice praised India’s commitment to creating a strong legal foundation that supports modern international trade. He explained that UNCITRAL’s goal is not to replace national laws but to create connections between them.
During his address, he highlighted how technology and reforms have transformed India’s judicial system. Innovations such as the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), live-streaming of court proceedings, and plans for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulatory framework are helping streamline the legal process.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a reliable and established legal system in the face of rising geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global supply chains. He pointed out that nations are looking for consistent legal frameworks and efficient ways to resolve disputes to enhance the stability of international trade and investment.
He also noted UNCITRAL’s ongoing role in fostering legal certainty, which in turn supports global commerce.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal remarked that Indian courts are increasingly utilizing internationally recognized legal principles alongside domestic laws when handling commercial disputes. This approach reflects India’s commitment to integrating global best practices in its legal system.
