Protests Erupt in New Delhi Over Education Minister’s Paper Leak Scandal

In recent weeks, New Delhi has seen thousands of young protesters rallying for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, sparked by alarming examination paper leaks. This youth-driven movement, known as the “cockroach” campaign, has been camped in the capital for over a month, urging the government to take accountability.

The demonstrations, largely driven by members of Generation Z, escalated this Monday when police clashed with protesters, resulting in over 100 injuries due to baton charges and tear gas. This movement stands as one of the most significant challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership during his current term.

Opposition parties have rallied in support of the protesters, joining in daily marches and even risking arrest to amplify calls for Pradhan’s resignation. Despite pressures from both the public and political parties, Pradhan has so far remained steadfast in his position.

Unlike various democracies where leaders sometimes step down amid controversies, Pradhan’s persistence seems consistent with a pattern observed during Modi’s 12 years in office, where multiple ministers have faced calls to resign but remained in their roles.

Historical Context of Unaccountability

A notable incident occurred shortly after Modi’s rise to power in 2014. Following the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq, a Muslim man accused of cow theft, then-Culture and Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma labeled the killing an “accident.” This statement sparked widespread outrage and demands for his resignation, but he chose to stay in his role, a decision not uncommon in Modi’s administration.

In 2016, the tragic death of a Dalit student, Rohith Vemula, further highlighted this issue. After being denied a hostel room, Vemula’s protests turned tragic when he took his own life, igniting student protests nationwide. Criticism fell heavily on ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya for their involvement, yet both retained their positions, with Irani even ascending to more significant roles later on.

Recent Controversies: Ajay Mishra Teni

Another incident in 2021 involved Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son was implicated in a violent incident that killed several farmers protesting against controversial agricultural laws. Despite public outcry and calls for accountability, Teni remained a minister until losing his seat in the 2024 elections.

Interestingly, Harsh Vardhan, the Health Minister during the pandemic, was one of the few who stepped down following widespread criticism of the government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis. His departure marked a rare moment of accountability in Modi’s government.

Critics of the current administration draw comparisons to previous governments, noting that under the Indian National Congress, several ministers faced resignations or dismissals in response to public dissatisfaction.

As protests continue to grow, the future of the “cockroach” movement and its impact on Indian politics remains to be seen, while the call for accountability from the government intensifies.
