CDC Links Taco Bell Lettuce to Cyclospora Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that a recent outbreak of cyclospora is connected to lettuce served at Taco Bell locations across five states in the Midwest.
According to the CDC, a total of 1,644 individuals have reported being infected with cyclospora in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. While there have been 94 hospitalizations due to this outbreak, there have been no reported deaths.
The FDA’s investigation traced the issue back to one supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico. The CDC stated that this lettuce was used at Taco Bell restaurants where infected individuals had dined.
Taco Bell and Taylor Farms Response
Taylor Farms, the supplier of the impacted lettuce, is taking action to remove the affected products from their distribution channels in the United States. However, the CDC emphasized that lettuce sold in grocery stores is not related to this outbreak, nor are other brands of lettuce.
This week, Taco Bell made the decision to take precautionary measures by temporarily removing lettuce from its menu items in the affected states. In a statement, the company mentioned, “Based on discussions with public health officials, we have acted quickly to remove potentially impacted lettuce from select states. The affected ingredient will be taken out of our supply chain immediately and replaced within 24 hours.”
Understanding Cyclosporiasis
Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne illness caused by a tiny parasite that people commonly pick up through contaminated food or water, particularly fresh produce. Dr. Omer Awan, a health expert, explained that leafy vegetables like lettuce and basil are often the sources of these infections.
Symptoms typically arise about a week after exposure, with patients experiencing fatigue, cramping, nausea, and severe watery diarrhea. Dr. Awan cautioned that this illness can last for weeks or even months if left untreated. He advised anyone experiencing diarrhea that persists for more than a few days to consult their doctor for assistance.
The CDC is urging individuals in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia to avoid consuming shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell locations.
