Anticipation Builds for Javelin Showdown at Commonwealth Games
The highly awaited rivalry in men’s javelin is making a comeback at the Commonwealth Games. On July 13, Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem announced that he will be competing in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This sets the stage for an exciting face-off with India’s Neeraj Chopra later this month.
The Games kick off on July 23, marking the first time Nadeem and Chopra will go head-to-head since the Birmingham 2022 event, where Chopra couldn’t compete due to an injury. Nadeem, who will lead the Pakistani athletics team in Glasgow, acknowledged that there will be more pressure on him as he returns to defend his title.
“I feel the pressure because I am the reigning champion, but I have trained hard,” Nadeem shared with PTI. “It’s great to be back in competition, and I aim to defend my gold medal in Glasgow.”
Glasgow Games: The Clash of Champions
This event will also see Chopra and Nadeem face off again, following their performances at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where both struggled with injuries. Chopra finished in eighth place, while Nadeem was tenth, making it a tough day for both athletes.
Over the past few years, their rivalry has captivated athletics fans, as they frequently compete at top events. Nadeem’s notable victory over Chopra happened at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, securing gold while Chopra earned silver. This remains Nadeem’s only major win against the Indian star.
In the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Nadeem won gold with a throw of 90.18 meters, as Chopra withdrew due to injury, which denied fans their first chance to see the two compete at the Commonwealth level.
“I know what I need to do to regain the title in a strong field,” Nadeem stated, revealing plans to participate in an international meet in Switzerland before heading to Glasgow. He views this as the perfect final preparation for the Commonwealth Games.
For Chopra, it’s a chance to reclaim the title he won on the Gold Coast in 2018, while for Nadeem, it is an opportunity to show that his Birmingham victory was not just a fluke. With both athletes back to full fitness, their rivalry promises an exciting chapter in Glasgow.
