Decoding India’s T20I Downfall: Insights from Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer, and the Bigger Narrative

As the Indian cricket team faced another defeat on Thursday in Bristol, captain Shreyas Iyer took a moment for an in-depth discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Though the specifics of their conversation remain unknown, the seriousness of the moment was palpable, reflecting the team’s struggles after their fifth loss in six matches.

This tour has turned into a nightmare for India’s white-ball team, marking the first time since the 2018/19 season that they have lost consecutive T20I series. The matches have been one-sided, and it feels as if India was never really in the competition at all.

Their troubles began with a surprising loss to Ireland in Belfast, which raised concerns about the team’s readiness. Iyer himself acknowledged that they underestimated Ireland’s progress. The next game against England was washed out, but the fourth match ended in a disheartening defeat. The fifth, a staggering 125-run loss at Trent Bridge, confirmed that this was not just a rough stretch but a full-blown crisis, as India was bowled out for just 76 runs—their second-lowest T20I score ever.

After that defeat, Iyer remarked that it couldn’t possibly get any worse. However, he was mistaken. Just two days later, India lost again in Bristol, with England chasing down 159 runs in just 13.5 overs, reminiscent of England’s earlier triumph over India in the T20 World Cup semi-final.

This semi-final was pivotal as India’s white-ball strategy shifted dramatically afterward. The team tried fresh players, which led to a brief period of dominance in T20 cricket. With that success, India made the bold decision to replace their World Cup-winning captain with Iyer, who had been away from international cricket for nearly two years.

Now, five defeats into this new journey, the team appears to be in decline. The batting lineup is struggling, the bowling plans are inconsistent, and many question whether the decision to change captains was justified in the first place.

To understand how we reached this point, we can look back just a year to another summer in England. At that time, Shubman Gill was leading the Test side. Despite a tumultuous series, a remarkable bowling display from Mohammed Siraj clinched a crucial match and squared the series. Siraj’s heroics temporarily masked deeper issues within the team.

This year, however, there was no miraculous performance to save India from defeat. The same problems in tactics that were overlooked in previous series became glaringly obvious as India fell behind 0-3 after four matches against England, who they had recently outperformed in the World Cup.

One major flaw has been the team’s inability to adapt to different playing conditions. The batting group has stuck to the same game plan, regardless of what the pitch demands. This lack of flexibility has led to unnecessary failures, as batters have repeatedly struggled to read a pitch that required a more nuanced approach.

Questions abound about the coaching staff’s decisions. Why was a powerful hitter like Tilak Varma moved from his preferred batting position? What role does Shivam Dube play in the lineup? Why has the bowling attack changed from match to match? These questions reflect a troubling lack of clarity and strategy from the team’s management.

The match in Bristol was difficult to watch as the Indian batters hesitated against an energized England attack. The team’s strength lies in aggressive play, yet they were unable to execute effectively. Only Iyer managed to shine, but his performance wasn’t enough.

Iyer described the team as being in transition and asked for patience from fans, confident that things would eventually improve. While that may hold true—India is likely soon to return to friendlier conditions—the team’s repeated exposure of tactical weaknesses suggests that until these issues are addressed, the future could look uncertain.

Last year, Siraj’s brilliance covered the cracks. This time, without such a hero, Gambhir’s coaching strategies have come under scrutiny as India grapples with a challenging phase.
