Djokovic Advances to Semifinals After Epic Quarterfinal Match at Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic expressed his excitement after securing a record-breaking victory against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The match, which lasted an astonishing five hours and 15 minutes, was likened by Djokovic to his unforgettable 2019 final against Roger Federer. He described it as one of the finest matches he has ever played at Wimbledon.
In a thrilling showdown, Djokovic triumphed with a score of 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (10-4). This win marks his 15th semifinal appearance at the prestigious tournament, making it the longest quarterfinal match in Wimbledon history.
Reflecting on the intense competition, Djokovic noted that the only match that compared to this one in terms of drama was his epic 2019 clash with Federer, where he saved two championship points before clinching victory in a historic tie-break.
“It’s thrilling to be part of such an epic match,” Djokovic said. “I don’t recall playing a match this long before, possibly except for the final against Roger.”
Throughout the match, the momentum swung back and forth, but in the end, Djokovic maintained his composure during the final tie-break, finishing just moments before Wimbledon’s 11 p.m. curfew. Both players received a standing ovation from the crowd, celebrating what is likely to be regarded as a modern classic in the tournament’s history.
“The crowd was incredible, especially in the last 30 minutes,” Djokovic commented. “They recognized how special this moment was for us as we battled against the curfew. I’m really proud of this win.”
At 39, Djokovic’s ability to compete successfully against much younger players remains impressive. He expressed satisfaction in beating opponents who are up to 15 years his junior, while maintaining high expectations for himself.
“I continue to challenge these young guys and coming out on top is a nice surprise,” Djokovic acknowledged. “Yet, I hold myself to a very high standard. I can be quite critical, but I also aim to enjoy these moments.”
Next, Djokovic will face world No. 1 and reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Earlier this year, Djokovic defeated Sinner in the Australian Open semifinals, although Sinner has a slight edge in their head-to-head record.
Looking ahead, Djokovic is confident in his abilities to compete against the best players. “I had a long match against Sinner in Australia,” he said. “This is a different stage, but it’s another great opportunity for me.”
Djokovic emphasized that his goal remains consistent: to showcase his skill on the biggest stages and continue proving himself among the elite players in the sport.
