Morning Health News Roundup

Good morning, everyone! It’s Allison here, stepping in for Theresa today.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the presidential fitness test from our school days. Do you remember the “sit and reach” challenge? We had climbing ropes at our school, but I don’t think we ever used them because of safety concerns. What activities do you remember from those tests? Feel free to share your memories!

Concerns over GLP-1 Prescribing Practices

A fresh study has raised alarms about how GLP-1 medications, like semaglutide and tirzepatide, are prescribed online. Recent investigations revealed troubling practices at 49 telehealth sites, with many not meeting expected clinical standards.

Katie Palmer reports that about 20% of these sites didn’t ask patients about their weight loss goals, and nearly half failed to inquire about any eating disorders. In some cases, patients could get prescriptions without ever speaking with a healthcare professional. Many doctors are urging regulatory bodies to improve these practices.

Rising Costs of Employer-Based Health Insurance

Bob Herman brings us an in-depth look at the escalating costs of employer-sponsored health insurance. With rising prices for medical services and medications, some companies are struggling to provide coverage. The percentage of working adults getting insurance through work has dropped from 67% in 1998 to about 60% now.

Herman pointed out a specific case in New Jersey where whistleblower claims led to Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield paying a $100 million settlement for improper payments to hospitals and doctors. This series is essential reading.

Ebola Outbreak and Response Challenges

Ebola has resurfaced in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, raising concerns about our ability to manage the outbreak effectively. Humanitarians Ivan Buendia Gayton and Eric D. Perakslis discuss how the current spread is occurring in densely populated areas, making containment much harder.

Both the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are currently operating with limited resources. If the situation continues, Ebola could become a persistent threat in Central Africa and beyond.

Remembering C.J. Peters

C.J. Peters, a well-known figure in virus research, passed away on July 4. His unique style and extensive knowledge made him a respected name in the field. I remember my first conversation with him about Ebola, where he shared fascinating insights and stories from his work.

Peters believed strongly in the importance of understanding how diseases spread and often highlighted that barriers won’t stop viruses. His contributions were invaluable, and he will be missed.

The Future of Healthcare with Gen Z Doctors

As more Gen Z doctors enter the field, can they help relieve the burden caused by retiring practitioners and burnout? Health care executive Frantz Berthaud discusses how younger doctors are often seen as “soft” and distracted but argues they might have important lessons for current leaders.
