East Point Energy Unveils New 100-Megawatt Energy Storage Facility in Harlingen, Texas
East Point Energy, a company owned by Equinor, has recently completed its latest project, Citrus Flatts, a significant energy storage facility in Harlingen, Texas. This facility is capable of producing 100 megawatts (MW) of power and storing 200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy. With this new project, East Point Energy strengthens its presence in Texas, marking its second operational site in the state.
At full capacity, Citrus Flatts can supply electricity to tens of thousands of homes for up to two hours. This project plays an important role in supporting the local economy by providing tax revenues that contribute to essential services for the residents of Harlingen.
Andrew Foukal, CEO of East Point Energy, highlighted the importance of the facility in meeting the growing energy needs in Texas. He noted, “As energy demand continues to rise, this project will not only enhance the electrical grid but also help keep energy costs manageable for families and businesses in the area. We are proud that it will bring millions in tax revenue to fund local priorities.”
In support of the community, East Point Energy has also donated $175,000 to improve the Harlingen Soccer Complex and has plans for a mural created by a local artist to adorn the front wall of the facility.
Orlando Campos, CEO of the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation, praised the project, stating, “This facility will consistently generate tax revenue for our community. The collaboration between the company and the city has ensured that the project meets safety standards while committing to ongoing communication with local residents.”
East Point Energy has partnered with the Harlingen Fire Department to conduct comprehensive training sessions and facility site visits aimed at enhancing emergency response planning. Ongoing training with first responders will continue regularly to ensure safety protocols are effectively implemented.
Fire Chief Rafael Balderas commended East Point Energy for their transparency and commitment to safety throughout the development of Citrus Flatts. He expressed optimism for a long-term partnership focused on community safety.
Energy storage plays a vital role in bolstering the reliability of the electrical grid and making energy more affordable for residents in Harlingen. State Representative Janie Lopez expressed pride in the local governance and the collaboration with East Point Energy, stating, “The City of Harlingen has dedicated years to developing this safe project that provides significant tax benefits and a continued commitment to community involvement. As demand for electricity grows, especially with the rise of data centers, we should support more projects like this one.”
