In 2014, there was a noticeable increase in goals during the World Cup, with 136 goals scored in the group stages and an impressive average of 2.83 goals per match. This was due to teams adopting a more aggressive and unpredictable style of play, enhancing the excitement of the tournament. However, in the following events, the average goals per match dipped back to around two and a half, with figures of 2.54 in 2018 and 2.50 in 2022.

The real game-changer came with the 2026 tournament, where the competition expanded to 48 teams. This led to a remarkable 218 goals in the group stages, pushing the average to 3.03 goals per match.

Looking at the data, the average number of goals scored in the group stages offers insights into how the World Cup has evolved in terms of competitiveness and entertainment. From 2006 to 2010, World Cups were marked by a European style of play that prioritized defense, reflected in just 98 goals during the group stages—a little over two per match. In 2010, there were 101 goals, showing a slight rise but still reflecting conservative gameplay.

Since the Brazilian World Cup in 2014, the tournaments have become more thrilling, with goal averages rising initially to 2.83. Though they later settled around two and a half in Russia and Qatar, this shift can be attributed to better attacking strategies, enhanced athleticism among players, and the globalization of tactical approaches in football.
