Final Day Drama in Group J: Argentina Shines, Austria and Algeria Advance

On Saturday, Group J of the World Cup provided plenty of excitement as Lionel Messi made history, Argentina completed their perfect run, and a dramatic equalizer by Austria secured both their spot and Algeria’s place in the Round of 32, sending Iran home.

When the final whistle blew, Argentina topped the group with three straight wins. Austria’s Sasa Kalajdzic scored a late equalizer to keep them in the tournament, while Algeria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams. Sadly, Iran’s chances to progress ended here.

In a standout moment, Messi added another record to his legacy. He became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches as Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 in Dallas, wrapping up a flawless group-stage.

With their qualification already secured, Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, decided to rest several regular players, making nine changes to the lineup. Despite this, Argentina dominated the game from the start.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring with a fantastic free-kick in the 19th minute, marking the first goal in the tournament by someone other than Messi. Lautaro Martinez then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after his first shot hit the crossbar.

Messi entered the match just after the hour mark and found the net 20 minutes later, taking his World Cup goal tally to 19 and marking his sixth goal of the tournament. This new goal also made him the first player to score in seven straight World Cup matches, surpassing legends like Just Fontaine and Jairzinho.

Jordan managed to score a goal late in the game, but it didn’t dampen Argentina’s spirits. The defending champions finished with a third consecutive win and will now face Cape Verde in the Round of 32 on Friday in Miami.

While Argentina’s success was smooth, the race for the other qualification spots was anything but simple.

Austria and Algeria Thrill in 3-3 Draw

Austria and Algeria delivered a thrilling match, ending in a dramatic 3-3 draw filled with twists. Marko Arnautovic gave Austria an early lead, but Rafik Belghali quickly equalized before halftime. The second half saw Marcel Sabitzer putting Austria back ahead, only for Riyad Mahrez to equalize again.

As the clock wound down, Mahrez seemed to have scored the winner in the third minute of stoppage time, but with just seconds remaining, Kalajdzic headed home to salvage a point, igniting celebrations from both teams.

This draw allowed Austria to secure the second position in Group J, setting up a Round of 32 clash with Spain. Algeria also advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and will meet Switzerland.

For Iran, who needed Austria to falter, Kalajdzic’s late equalizer marked the painful end of their World Cup journey.

Stay tuned for more updates on the World Cup!
