Former Indian Skipper Backs Young Talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to Revive Test Cricket
Former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth is optimistic about the potential of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to reignite interest in Test cricket. For that to happen, he believes Sooryavanshi must successfully transition from the fast-paced T20 format to the more traditional style of Test matches.
After an impressive season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sooryavanshi has made his first appearance in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series in Ireland and England. The Indian team will face Ireland in two matches before a five-match series against England starting June 26 in Belfast.
Srikkanth highlighted Sooryavanshi’s unique talent for captivating audiences. He emphasized the importance of allowing the young player to grow naturally without the pressure of high expectations.
“What stands out about Vaibhav is his desire to score runs and dominate the game,” Srikkanth shared. “If he evolves from T20s to ODIs and then to Test cricket, I believe he will succeed and help revive the interest in Test formats.”
Srikkanth, however, noted that the young cricketer faced scrutiny after a less-than-stellar performance during his recent tour with India A in Sri Lanka. The veteran cricketer urged everyone to be patient and not judge Sooryavanshi based on just one series.
“Don’t pay attention to what people say, Vaibhav,” Srikkanth advised. “It’s essential to stay true to your game. One series does not define a player. Just give him time.”
He praised Sooryavanshi’s performance in the IPL, where he won multiple awards, showcasing his potential against seasoned players.
“His talent is undeniable, and he needs support to grow. He could be a match-winner for India, so we should give him space and encouragement,” Srikkanth said.
Srikkanth welcomed Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the senior T20I squad, believing that even if he does not play immediately, being with the team will provide valuable experience.
“For the upcoming series, it’s good for him to be in the reserves. He needs to grasp the dynamics of international cricket,” he explained, acknowledging that players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are already key members of the team.
When asked if he saw any similarities between Sooryavanshi and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Srikkanth was quick to clarify.
“Let’s avoid comparisons. Sachin is the epitome of cricket, but Vaibhav has immense potential, too,” he stated, adding that both players have their unique qualities.
Praising Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach and strong mindset, Srikkanth expressed confidence in his ability to shape the future of Indian cricket across all formats.
“His shot-making ability, bat speed, and overall talent are impressive,” he concluded.
This perspective on Sooryavanshi reflects the excitement surrounding young cricketers in India, as fans and experts eagerly await their development in the sport.
