FIFA Leverages Cricket’s Tech: Snicko Makes the Call in Sweden vs Tunisia Showdown at World Cup 2026

Sweden Takes Commanding Victory Over Tunisia in World Cup Opener

In an electrifying start to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Sweden faced Tunisia at the Stadio Monterrey on June 15, securing a decisive 5-1 win. The match featured an unexpected twist, showcasing the use of cricket-like technology to resolve a goal controversy.

Sweden was already on a scoring spree in Group F, but the real drama unfolded when substitute Mattias Svanberg thought he had scored just moments after coming onto the field. He netted a close-range shot mere seconds after a restart, becoming one of the fastest substitutes to score in World Cup history. However, his celebration was short-lived as the assistant referee flagged the goal for offside.

Sweden’s players and coaching staff immediately contested the call, believing Alexander Isak’s slight touch during the buildup had kept Svanberg onside. To settle the debate, VAR officials turned to a novel technology known as “Snicko,” typically used in cricket. This technology can detect even the tiniest contact with the ball.

The Snicko graph indicated a clear spike when the ball passed Isak’s foot, confirming he had indeed made contact. This evidence led to the decision being overturned, allowing Svanberg to officially celebrate Sweden’s fourth goal of the night.

Despite the controversy, Sweden’s performance was impressive and left a mark on the tournament. Yasin Ayari kicked off the scoring with a powerful strike, followed by goals from Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, all contributing to a relentless offensive display. Ayari later completed his brace, adding to an exceptional game.

On the other hand, Tunisia struggled to keep up with Sweden’s pace and aggression. They managed only a few threatening moments, primarily from set pieces, and spent most of the match defending against Sweden’s constant pressure.

With this victory, Sweden leads Group F and is set to face the Netherlands on June 20. Meanwhile, Tunisia will look to regroup after a tough outing against Sweden.

The excitement of the FIFA World Cup continues as teams vie for glory.
