President Trump Announces Potential Agreement with Iran
WASHINGTON: On Thursday, President Donald Trump revealed that the U.S. has reached a “great settlement” with Iran aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He mentioned that a formal agreement could be signed in Europe in the coming days.
This announcement came shortly after Trump hinted at plans for new military strikes against Iran, only to reverse those intentions as a peace deal seemed imminent. Currently, there has been no official response from Iran regarding the settlement.
In his remarks from the Oval Office, Trump stated, “We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran,” adding that they would finalize documents shortly. He emphasized that the agreement would ensure “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” though he did not provide specific details on how this would be achieved.
Trump also indicated that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil shipments which Iran has claimed to close, would be reopened once the deal is finalized.
The conflict between the U.S. and Iran escalated after military actions were initiated on February 28. Although a fragile ceasefire was established in April, tensions have continued with both sides engaging in exchanges of fire. Trump has wavered between optimism about a potential agreement and strong rhetoric against Iran, recently accusing Tehran of deceit.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump announced plans for “very hard” military strikes on Iran, specifically targeting its oil infrastructure. However, he later stated, “Based on discussions with the highest levels of Iranian leadership, I have cancelled the scheduled strikes for this evening.”
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that the country had not yet approved any agreement text. Nevertheless, several Iranian and Western sources indicated that efforts to negotiate a temporary deal to halt hostilities have ramped up, especially given the existing fragile ceasefire since April.
The situation remains fluid as both sides work towards a potential resolution.
