New Study Reveals Health Impacts Linked to Birth Order
A recent study suggests that whether a person is the first or second child in their family could influence their health later in life. Researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University analyzed medical records from 10 million siblings in the U.S. over two decades and found some interesting patterns.
The study looked at a wide range of health issues, examining 569 different disease categories among families and siblings. They identified 150 health conditions that seemed to be linked to birth order.
First-born children were found to have higher rates of neurodevelopmental and mental health issues, such as autism, ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, and OCD. They also faced a greater likelihood of allergies. On the other hand, second-born children showed increased risks for conditions like migraines, shingles, substance use disorders, and stomach problems like gastritis.
During a discussion on “Fox & Friends,” Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, praised the study for opening up new questions about health. He mentioned that the increased rates of ADHD among first-borns might relate to how much attention they receive from parents. “The parents can be very focused on them—almost hovering,” he explained, which could lead to more stimulation.
Dr. Siegel also noted that differences in allergies could be due to environmental exposure. First-born children often have immune systems that haven’t encountered a lot of outside factors yet. “If their immune system isn’t set up properly, they may develop allergies,” he added.
The findings raise the possibility that biological and psychological factors also play a role in sibling health differences. For example, he mentioned that the environment of the womb changes after the first pregnancy, possibly making it different for subsequent children.
While the study highlights significant patterns, it does have some limitations. It shows correlations rather than proving direct causes. The results rely on health insurance data, which can be influenced by various factors like how families seek medical help and how diagnoses are made.
Overall, researchers emphasized that while birth order may be a modest indicator of certain health risks, it should not be seen as a definite predictor of health outcomes. The results of this study were published in the journal Nature Health.
