KL Rahul’s absence from the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2026 auction, where he went unsold at a base price of Rs 2 lakh, has raised a lot of questions. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter, known for his outstanding performance and previously sold for Rs 14 crore at the IPL auction, surprisingly attracted no bids in this significant domestic T20 competition.
At first glance, this news might seem shocking, but Rahul’s unsold status is linked more to his availability than his skills or market value. During the auction, it became clear that teams wanted to know if Rahul would be available for the upcoming Maharaja Trophy starting on June 20. The auctioneer informed them that he was not likely to participate, which led to teams hesitating to place any bids.
With tight budgets and player availability being crucial for team strategies, franchises preferred to invest in players who could commit fully to the tournament. Rahul is expected to be on national duty during June and July, notably being part of the ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan, with the third ODI set for the same day the Maharaja Trophy begins.
Due to these availability concerns, teams shifted their focus to players who would be present for the entirety of the competition, rather than risk their budget on a high-profile player whose participation was uncertain. This issue also affected other Indian players in the auction, as franchises were cautious in their spending, taking potential international commitments into account.
On the other hand, experienced Karnataka players like Karun Nair and Manish Pandey attracted significant interest. Nair was picked up by Mangaluru Dragons for Rs 18 lakh, while Pandey joined Gulbarga Mystics for Rs 12.75 lakh. India internationals Devdutt Padikkal and Prasidh Krishna also found buyers, though their prices reflected similar concerns about their availability.
Even though Rahul wasn’t sold in this auction, he continues to be a vital part of India’s white-ball plans, having had another successful IPL season and remaining focused on the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup.
