Lawsuit Filed Against The Bot Company Over Property Damage

A lawsuit has been filed in San Francisco County Superior Court against The Bot Company by homeowner Sean Donovan. The complaint states that the company rented Donovan’s home under deceptive conditions for an 11-night stay in April.

According to the lawsuit, The Bot Company conducted unauthorized activities at the property, including testing robotic prototypes and filming promotional materials. It alleges that more than 30 individuals entered the home without permission and that significant damage was caused during their visit.

Donovan claims the guests left behind a mess, damaging walls, floors, and furniture while also removing personal items. He is seeking approximately $12,383 to cover the damages and lost income, as he typically charges more for commercial activities.

The issues became apparent to Donovan when he visited the home to collect trash. He noticed wires running into the house and discovered a man working with a laptop near what looked like a robot. When the guests left, Donovan found the home in disarray with kitchen items scattered, appliances scratched, and furniture damaged. He also reported that personal belongings, including a shoe rack and shoes, were missing.

His investigation revealed that the guests were employees of The Bot Company, and he found similar complaints from other hosts who had rented to the startup.

Donovan argues that if the company had being truthful about their intentions—like renting the property specifically for robot testing—they could have reached a fair agreement. Instead, he feels violated due to their misleading actions.

The Bot Company, valued at $2 billion and founded by former Tesla and Cruise employees, is working on robots to help with household chores. However, Donovan emphasizes that their current actions are causing harm to Airbnb hosts’ properties.

As of now, The Bot Company has not responded to requests for comment. Donovan expresses concern that while the company aims to innovate house-cleaning automation, they are risking the homes of those they rent from.
