Israeli Airstrike Takes Out Hamas Military Leader Mohammed Odeh in Gaza

Gazans Lament Loss of Hamas Leaders Amid Ongoing Struggles

In Gaza, reactions are mixed following the recent killing of senior Hamas leader Mohammed Odeh in an Israeli airstrike just before the Eid al-Adha celebrations. Many Gazans express frustration with Hamas leadership, noting that civilians, rather than the military leaders, are suffering the consequences of ongoing conflict.

Witnesses reported that Odeh’s family members were also killed in the airstrike, yet hours later, Gaza’s markets were bustling with shoppers preparing for Eid. This scene highlighted a disconnect felt by many residents between Hamas leaders and the everyday lives of civilians. According to reports, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry indicates that over 70,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict over nearly three years, with no clear distinction made between combatants and non-combatants.

Hadeel Oueis, editor-in-chief of Jusoor News, pointed out the leadership shake-up within Hamas could lead to disorganization. She stated, “With the loss of key leaders and centralized command, Hamas is transforming into a smaller militia that competes with other armed groups in Gaza.”

Israeli officials have labeled Odeh as one of the key planners behind the October 7 attacks on Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel would “soon or later reach all of them,” indicating ongoing pressures toward Hamas.

Residents in Gaza have begun to express indifference toward the deaths of Hamas leaders. One activist shared, “We didn’t feel anything when Haddad or the others were killed. Ordinary people are the ones paying the price for the recklessness of leaders who make poor decisions.”

Despite the continued assassinations, some Israeli analysts caution against assuming that Hamas is on the brink of collapse. Experts believe Hamas continues to maintain a functional hierarchy and that leadership positions are highly contested, showing resilience despite significant losses.

As discussions about Gaza’s future increase globally, many Gazans hold on to a shared hope that the relentless cycle of war might soon come to an end. “Civilians cannot continue to bear the entire burden of this conflict,” said a local activist, echoing the sentiments of many in the region.
